There is written evidence that describes the existence of massage in China as far back as 3000 BC. The Romans and Greeks also used massage on a daily basis for its restorative powers and as an aid for relaxation.
Developed 200 years ago, Swedish massage is generally attributed to the Swedish gymnastics teacher and fencing master Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839). However, it was in fact the Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger (1838-1909) who adopted the French names to denote the basic movements under which he systemized Swedish massage as we know it today.

Swedish massage is also known as body or holistic massage and is the most common form of body massage used in the UK today. Swedish massage uses firm but gentle pressure to relax the muscles and improve circulation. The benefits of Swedish massage are numerous but most commonly it is the benefit of tension relief and deep relaxation that makes this form of massage so popular.
